Slow - I Couldn't Care About the Characters

Caroline and Francis decide to go for the cut price option of a holiday & do a house swap for a week. They swap their inner city flat for a suburban house in easy reach of London. The house is minimalist and lacking in character although there are several things about the swap which make Caroline uneasy. In a parallel thread we also learn about Caroline's relationship with Carl. It happened a few years previously when their marriage was struggling and Francis had become addicted to presciption drugs. Is the past affair linked with Caroline's uneasiness in the house?

I really struggled with this book as I found it quite slow & turgid. Somewhere along the line the suspense hadn't built up and I was keen for some serious editing so we could get to the end. There isn't anything wrong with the concept of the book as it was an interesting twist on the ex-lover/stalker sort of story. It was just the telling of it dragged on a bit.

I couldn't find it in my heart to like the characters overly much. I felt sympathy for Francis but couldn't say I liked him particularly. I got cross with Caroline for having an affair when her husband needed her & she had a young child - yes I know it was a tough time but did she really think this would help?I didn't much like Caroline later either. Unfortunately, the author hadn't presented me with people that I could care about particularly.

This is one of those books where the concept is good but the execution mediocre.
